National Young Leaders (NYLs) are exceptional youth who generously provide advice, validation, and inspiration to help others discover and expand their potential. This is a great way to apply your learning and experiences to positively influence others’ lives. As an NYL, you would dedicate a few hours each month to responding to student questions via email or online videoconferencing. While being an NYL on the National Student Network is a great way to spotlight your social efforts, there are certain responsibilities that you must agree to prior to application:

•   You may be contacted by students interested in your area of work and/or education. The initial introduction will be facilitated by the National Student Network. General information on the requesting student will be shared with you. As a general courtesy, you must respond within 48 hours. If you do not have time within the 2 days’ timeframe, kindly reply to indicate that you will get back to him or her at a later date.
•   You must at all times show respect to inquiring students. After you have responded to students' initial question, the decision to foster a long-term mentorship is at your discretion. You may choose to hide your profile if you are occupied or unavailable during a particular period of time.
•   A great way to share your knowledge or insight is to submit a concise article to the NSN website on a subject of your choice. Articles can range from a reflection on schooling to an instructive piece such as how to start a successful club. NYLs are expected to compose one article (>300 words) per year.
•   NYLs are also advocates of youth education and opportunities. Where possible, inform the NSN of meaningful and relevant opportunities.
•   Each NYL term is one year in length. Upon completion of a term, you may choose to remain on the Network by completing a brief re-application form.

Qualifications

•   Intrinsically motivated; strongly committed to helping others.
•   Knowledge and expertise in at least of one of NSN's Areas of Help.
•   Strong interpersonal skills.
•   Effective written and oral communication skills.
•   The ideal applicant is between 18 and 30 years of age.

In addition to sharing their knowledge and experience through peer-mentorship, National Young Leaders have the opportunity of taking part in the Regional Action Project (RAP). In collaboration with the NSN Regional Chairs, NYLs promote awareness of NSN programs and services to schools and third-party organizations. In a self-motivated setting, NYLs plan and carry out marketing campaigns that allow integration of their organizational skills. Please review the RAP Reference Document for for information.
